HISTORICAL PLACES
MAKAM MAHSURI
Beras Terbakar, Langkawi, is located in the house property of Ku Halim Bin Ku Hassan in Kampung Raja, the island's former capital. When the army leader saw that they were about to lose the Pancur Straits fight in 1821, he dispatched his soldiers to tell the people to gather all of the island's paddy harvest and burn it on fire. As a precautionary measure, the island's primary source of food has been sealed off from the Siamese. People came from miles around to burn the entire year's worth of crops here.
You'll note that a little field in Beras Terbakar, Langkawi, has been preserved and safeguarded today. The pit was excavated in this location. Because the hole is no longer there, a sign is erected to show where it was. A little glass cabinet displays the rice samples that have been preserved in the region.
BERAS TERBAKAR
Mahsuri, Langkawi's most beautiful woman, was the subject of much admiration. When a lady was jealous of her beauty, she hurt her. There were many fascinating stories given by a storyteller who visited the town when Mahsuri's husband was serving in the war. To accommodate this storyteller, Mahsuri provided him with a room to stay.
The village chief's wife, envious of Mahsuri's relationship with the storyteller, created rumours that she was having an affair with her. She was stabbed to death as a punishment for her crimes. White blood spilled from her body when she died, demonstrating that she is genuinely innocent of the murder. For the following seven generations, she cursed Langkawi island with an unending stream of disaster. The Siamese invaded and captured the island soon after her death (and the history of Beras Terbakar came to be). In the early 20th century, the eighth generation of Langkawi's population arrived and the curse was lifted, paving the way for the island to flourish again.
